How-to on adding whois servers
to Sam Spade for Windows(tm) v1.14





In Sam Spade(tm) Personal, you can add whois servers to the list permanently, it's just that it’s not that easy to do.


Open regedit (Start, Run, regedit)


IMPORTANT: On the file menu, click Registry, Export Registry File. You will be prompted to save the file as type .reg – if you don’t want to back up the entire registry, select the branch containing the information you are about to change.


Pick a location you can easily find and a filename you can easily remember. For example, regbak1.reg saved in My Documents.


Go to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blighty Design\Spade\Whois


The first string value under Default inside the Whois key should be:


.1.                    "Exodus suballocation||rwhois.exodus.net|"


(Yes, those are pipe characters inside that value - make sure you follow this format when you do the edits I am about to describe)


There should also be a .2. and a .3. as well. That key value tells you you're in the right place. BE CERTAIN YOU ARE! Mistakes in editing the registry by hand can render your computer useless. Typos can too, so be very cautious.


Right-click in the right pane of regedit. A little box opens that says 'New'. Point at it so it highlights, then left click on String Value in the little dialog that opens.


You'll get a new value at the bottom of the pane with New Value #1 highlighted in it. Replace this with (without the quotes):


.4.                    (that's a period, a four, and a period - no spaces)


Hit Enter. Your new string is created.


Now double-click the .4. new string. In the box that opens, type (for example):


Korean whois server||whois.nic.or.kr|


and click OK. Your new string value is complete.


Repeat this using (as another example):


.5.


and


Brazilian whois server||whois.nic.br|


These new values will appear in the whois pulldown in the numbered order you see them in the registry. If you want to change the order, you could, but why fool around in there any more than is absolutely necessary? :-)
